If you're stuck for specific things to look for in your art, I would suggest:
- anatomy (including clothing folds)
- dynamism and interest
- shading/highlighting

Personally, I would advise against using random diffused glows for a background, unless you're intentionally backlighting the character. Otherwise it seems to highlight how flat the character is against a background of simple colour, which isn't really what you want.

One of the other comments suggested cel shading with colours so dark they're almost black - that's certainly one style. Here I've used purple to do the shadows and then set the layer on the 'shade' function in SAI, but of course you can just use a darker colour. Just never shade with pure black, white, or grey. That makes things look flat.

But I do have to agree with the other comments that you're doing alright right now, and that the only thing to do is practice.

In hindsight, I may have drawn the left arm in my version a little long. Usually the elbow lines up the the bottom of the rib cage, which in this case is also the smallest part of the waist.

Good luck, and I hope this is a bit helpful!
